So what's the difference between an embryo that's three weeks along, and a sperm and an egg separated by a foot of reproductive tract? They both have the potential to become a child, but neither one currently is a child. Both of them, if left alone, would probably become a child, but both are interrupted, one by a condom, and one by the abortion. At least, that's how I see it. People kind of suck. Honestly, I'm amazed that you need a license to fish, but not a license to have a kid. It's kind of crazy. |

*pokes head in to see the mess she started* Oh. Oh my. *leaves as quickly and silently as she arrived* Yeah. Let's agree to disagree and lock this thread before we start hating each other. *edit*
THIS. MY GOD. You need a license to do ANYTHING WORTH DOING in this world, yet we let IDIOTS do the thing that is probably THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ANYONE CAN EVER DO EVER without a second thought. Raising a decent, productive member of society is the most important job on the planet, and half of these people aren't even REMOTELY qualified Exhibit A: Maury. Watch it. NONE of those people are doing ANYTHING with their lives. They are, in NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM contributing anything positive to our society. And don't even act like you don't have a list of people that NEVER SHOULD'VE BEEN BORN. Like you don't have a list of people that this world would've been better off without, or could've waited for someone to come along to DO THE JOB PROPERLY. And kind of off topic, but they at least need a counselor, or someone at the hospital to tell the mother when the baby is born, "NO, YOU CAN'T NAME YOUR CHILD THAT. NO. WHY? BECAUSE I'M THE COUNSELOR, AND YOUR CHILD IS NOT GOING TO LIVE THE REST OF HER LIFE WITH THE NAME "LESBI ANNE." OR THE NAME SHANIQUA. OR LATOYA. OR ORANGE CANDY. OR LA-A (PRONOUNCED LAH-DASH-AH). OR SHADYNASTY (PRONOUNCED SHAH-DYE-NASTY). ARRRRGH FUCK I HATE PEOPLE WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING. WHEN DID EVERYONE GET SO FUCKING STUPID (subject for another thread). Super lol. Let me just stop by to apologize if I've offended. This an issue that's still unsettled for me and I just don't like seeing it handled insensitively. Tata. |

Nah, you didn't offend anyone (or me anyway). This is just something that no one will ever agree on ever, regardless of research done, or laws put into place. As far as not getting pregnant in the first place, I see your point, but you seemed to have missed the one we're trying to make. Just telling people not to have sex or risk pregnancy simply doesn't work, because for that to work everyone would have to agree on how sex should be talked about. And we can't even agree on that yet (again, a WHOLE 'nother thread, which I won't start because that'll just get swallowed up into a void of dick jokes). Proof of that lies in the abstinence teachings. Again, no statistics to cite, but I guarantee if you look, you'll find statistic that show how teen pregnancies have only gotten higher since abstinence was being taught. Well I never said not to have sex, but rather to try not to get pregnant. Though, yeah, that is enforced by my personal moral code. Not that I would realistically expect anyone outside of my religion (or some other religions) to follow it. Also, if those abstinence statistics are true then that is whack. |

I've seen stuff talking about how teen pregnancy rates are so much lower in the EU because they teach sex ed over abstinence. Of course thats their conclusion but it seemed pretty solid. |

I remember somewhere seeing a state by state breakdown of teen pregnancy rates, and almost universally, it was the states that had abstinence-only sex ed that had the highest teen pregnancy rates. People are going to have sex, no matter what you tell them, so you might as well give them good information on the subject and make it easy to get ahold of the various types of birth control. Not doing that would be... dumb. You know what would be great? If there were just some reversible sterilization thing we could give everyone at birth, and then just turn off when they hit 25. But of course, nothing like that exists, and in the thirty seconds since I thought of that, I've already come up with several reasons that it's a terrible idea, so never mind. Still it's nice to dream. (Also, I am pretty much immune to being offended, just so you know. There is literally nothing you could say to me that I haven't probably already heard before.) |

That's one way to do it. Or, you could just take a girls eggs out when they become of age, and freeze them. If/when she wants a child, she goes to the doctor, and begins the process. Takes at least one child psychology class, a lamaze class, talks with a financial advisor about the cost of a child, and what spending habits the parents need to break/form to support this child properly, talks with a counselor about any nervousness about becoming a parent, or their own childhood and how it might affect them as parents, etc and getting those feelings settled and out of the way (and while they're there, DECIDE ON A DECENT NAME AND GET IT APPROVED), and of course, all the normal talks one has with their doctor when considering having a baby. However, make this process MANDATORY. You MUST complete some areas of this process before you can even GET your egg (the lamaze classes will come after obviously), and background checks will be performed before the process even BEGINS to see if we even want you having kids (i.e., drug issues, alcoholism, psychological issues, criminal records, finances, etc). If you do not qualify to start, fix the problem and come back. Rehab and stay clean for a predetermined amount of time, therapy, get a better job; the only one where there might be some issue is criminal records (depending on what it is they did, how long they were in jail, if the father was in jail, is in jail, or has been charged and might go to jail, that obviously slows down the process and makes it harder, or in the case of being charged, puts it to a halt until the matter is resolved). Of course, there will be some sort of checklist to document all this stuff to make sure it got done, have it all with you to turn in when you want your egg. Yeah it's a lot of time and paperwork, but just think how many people won't rush into parenthood because of all the time and work they'd have to put in. And those who wanna have sex before marriage (or just don't wanna be married) won't have to worry about birth control or getting pregnant, because they won't have any eggs to fertilize. And with a process in place, this could open up numerous jobs in the medical field. I've had the process thought for quite sometime, just not the first part about not having access to the eggs. That was Kevin's idea. |

Wow, the relevance is astounding. Klown, as much as I like the sound of that whole outline you just gave, I would never, ever put something like birth in the hands of the government. The only way for that to work would be for the government to enforce it, and then if some super government situation got out of hand they could just be like "LOL POPULATION FAIL" and not let anyone have kids. Like China's One Child thing, but with zero children. Then the whole tide of the population would flip onto its head. Also, to everyone, my apology was more directed at Element, because we have very, very, very, very, very differing views on the subject. Edited by Palmer, Mar 1 2010, 07:22 PM.

I know, right? But yeah, I have to agree with you about the egg bank thing. It suffers from the same problems as the magical vasectomy thing I proposed. Of course, if I were in charge of the design of the human body, reproduction would be completely voluntary, regardless of how much sex you have. |

@Palmer While it is a slippery slope with the gov't control, we don't have really a population problem, just a bunch of really irresponsible, and really, really, REALLY stupid people. But hink of all the things you need a license to do: Get married. Work in a medical profession. Drive. Teach. Anything that's vitally important and potentially dangerous you MUST have a license to do, ad you must go through some sort of schooling or preparation, and then be field tested on it, to make sure you're competent enough to do it. Why isn't parenting one of them? And before anyone says the whole "nothing will prepare you for being a parent," I'm sorry, but that's a lie. As noted above, plenty of things can prepare you, it's just no one is willing to put the time and effort to do them correctly. |

This is a very good point. However it would have to be pretty vague, since there are many different ways of parenting. |
