According to this article, Utah is set to become the first state to criminalize miscarriages. Well, kinda. Read the actual wording of the bill before you flip out too much. That particular website obviously has some biases/political leanings and the way they're going on about it makes it sounds like if a woman has a miscarriage for any reason, they'll be brought up on charges of criminal homicide. In reality, they're trying to make it so that someone who has an ILLEGAL abortion will be brought up on criminal charges. Apparently, it stemmed from this wonderful shining example of human decency. That case is also a big reason why the bill flew through the Utah legislature with overwhelming majorities. HOWEVER, I find myself completely against this bill. There's no reason they should be trying to pass a new law to charge that guy or people like him with criminal homicide. And as much as I hate to use the slippery slope argument (seriously, I hate it), part of me is still very concerned at the fact that all it takes is one Utah judge to (mis)interpret that law in their own way and a woman could be brought up on charges for accidentally causing/having a miscarriage. Oh, and there's that other part of me that says STAY OUT OF ABORTION LAWS. Your body, your rules. Woo libertarianism. |

As much as I agree with you, that kind of logic doesn't fly with someone who thinks that abortion is literally murder. Hence the disconnect. Anyway. I read the bill. It irritates me that the definition of homicide has been extended to interrupting the development of a fetus, something that is pretty much not a human life, at least before it is fairly well along. That said, would agree with the overall goal of the bill (that is, to stop women from having dangerous, non professional abortions), but of course Utah abortion restrictions absolutely suck. If a woman can't get a properly conduction, properly supervised abortion, then what other option does she have? The best solution would be to legalize proper abortions. |
| "Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world - "No, you move."" | |

Well, right, until there's another body inside the body. I don't know, I'm torn between protecting unborn children but not invading privacy. As much as I don't like abortion, there are serious cases that require it (that Utah has already outlined in their abortion laws). I really just hate when abortion is used as a birth control because people are irresponsible. If everyone would take it seriously then we wouldn't have this problem. So I'm assuming this isn't actually called the "Criminal Miscarriage" legislature? As much as I don't want to believe it, you're right, it definitely doesn't look like Utah has created any legislation that protects someone who accidentally miscarriages. Definitely can't support it unless that's addressed. (Maybe it is? Too lazy to research it.) Edited by Palmer, Feb 27 2010, 04:29 PM.
