This movie is about a 15 year old girl named Mia whose family is in a part of the British underclass. She lives with her Mom and 11(ish) year old sister. Her whole family fight all the time and everyone drinks to escape their lives (yes, including her sister) and the movie starts with her best friend basically refusing to hang out with her anymore. Essentially this leaves her only one outlet for her anger, at the beginning of the film at least, - dancing. I know what you are thinking, another one of those "trouble youth dances their way out of trouble and into the life they've always wanted" movie. I can't really say anything without going into spoiler territory, but that assumption would be inaccurate. I've read some stuff on the British underclass, chiefly Life at the Bottom by Theodore Dalrymple, and the attitudes and habits of the people in the film seemed like a really accurate presentation. The entire time during the film the main character is dealing with all the shit that comes from living where she lives and trying to figure out how she fits into a world that she pretty much hates. To do this she partially turn to dancing (even filming herself doing a routine, mailing it in, and getting a dance audition), but the main focus of the plot is on her interacting with her Mom's new boyfriend and how he is a father figure and/or love interest for her (fucked up, I know). According to Wikipedia the actress playing the main character actually did not like to dance, which kind of shows through in the movie as she isn't incredible at it and there are few direct shots of her dancing at all. But, yeah, other than that I thought this movie was a pretty powerful drama about trying to survive life in the British underclass and come out as a functioning human being. 8/10 |

dance + father figure and/or love interest makes me think of Flowers in the Attic. I think it would be interesting to watch this to see how alike the two are. |
