Really?

From the peace prize committee:
Quote:

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future"

From the Nobel Peace Prize Wiki:
Quote:

the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

1. he hasn't done that
2. hasn't reduced armies, beefed up troops in Afghanistan
3. I'm unaware of peace congress promotions, I guess he could have done that

Honestly even if you accept their reasons I'm still not buying it. I haven't personally gained any hope, any enthusiasm I may of had had for a fresh president has faded in the face of his inability to actually accomplish anything. Man. This is just like when Gore took it over that jew saving nun. Read: it's stupid.

I think it's pretty much a "thank god you're not Bush" award.

He was not a bad president.

I'm curious as to why you think he would be, because I know you're far more well informed than the average young liberal who's only source of news is the Daily Show.

Do you really believe the economic recession was his fault?

Do you believe the liberation of Iraq & Afghanistan wasn't a good cause?

Do you think Bush is a stupid person?

Do you really think Obama will do anything to repeal what Bush has done in the past 8 years?

Has Obama done ANYTHING remarkably different while he's been in office?

I'd like to add that I'm not a fan of Bush, but I'm sick of people demonizing the man based on unfounded principles

As presidents go, he was pretty bad. That doesn't make him a bad person, though. For the record, I don't think he was evil or anything. Mostly just misinformed and misguided.

I reserve "evil" for the likes of Karl Rove.

Do I detect a note of sarcasm? You know, it's not nice to presume things right off the bat like that. It makes you sound defensive.

His fault? No. There are a whole lot of factors involved in something as huge as a global economic recession, so blaming everything on one person is stupid. A fair portion of the blame lies with Clinton for stupidly pushing housing for people that could not afford it and promising to back up companies like Fannie Mae if things went south.

But you can't deny that pushing for reduced market regulation (based upon the absurd principle that banks and businesses will regulate themselves) led to financial irresponsibility. Of course, given how incredibly unscrupulous all the large financial institutions have been, something like this was bound to happen.

Oh, and his budgeting sucked:

You're kidding, right? Does anyone even remember the bullshit reasons the Bush administration gave for invading? And did you miss what a colossal fuckup it's been so far?

And this doesn't even touch on the PATRIOT act, Guantanamo, "enhanced interrogation", the stem cell bullshit, and his 12th century view of human rights. Do you think refusing to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", supporting the Federal Marriage Amendment, and pouring money into abstinence only education make for a good domestic policy? Oh yeah, and let's not forget his desire to "Teach the Controversy".

Frankly, I don't even know what to think about his intelligence. He might just be a terrible public speaker, something with which I can sympathize. He did go to Yale, but I have a feeling that was more a result of his father's status than any accomplishment on his part.

Hopefully.

The reason this award is so stupid is that Obama hasn't had much of a chance to do anything so far. Hell, the nominations ended eleven days after he took office, so he was nominated less than two weeks after becoming president.

I'm not demonizing the man. I just don't think he did a good job as President. He probably wasn't the worst president, but he's down there on the list.

There wasn't any sarcasm in what I said, I KNOW you're more well informed than the average young liberal.

You think he had crappy budgeting? are we forgetting the role of the president here? The Fed manages the budget and Senate has an exponentially greater influence than the president on which bills are passed that affect the economy. But I'm glad you agree it wasn't his fault.

Weapons of Mass destruction aside, do you understand how utterly fucking ruined our economy would be if Saddam switched the payment for his oil from the Dollar to the Euro? Yes... we did invade Iraq for oil, but people fail to realize how important it is for global political/economic stability. Yes, 9/11 was the catalyst but the gun had been loaded cocked and aimed at Iraq well before then by the Clinton administration, and rightfully so. For moral reasons on why we should be there; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeX9ib0lK30

aside from that I think we'd agree on mostly everything else

Bush just happens to be in the office during the wrong time, the same thing would've still happened regardless of who is president.

Oh... well, um... that's good. I guess I sort of overreacted, then.

Bear in mind where I spend most of my year. The 26% of the population that still liked Bush when he left office? I think they all live in Lubbock.

Also, this explains the continued success of Nickelback.

No no no, they live in Huntsville. Election season here was bad enough, but the day after Election Day was miserable, and I didn't even vote (I didn't care for either candidate at the time). There were fights, arguments in every god damn class, I don't know why I even got up that day. At one point, I just left the classroom and told Kevin to text me when they were through.

It's gotten better, but not by much. But I'm an English major, so most of them are either liberal as all hell, or just don't care. Kevin's a business major, so he sees the brunt of it. Granted, if the Republicans here were more like Fed, who's actually researched and intelligent, it wouldn't be so bad, but most of them just recite party platforms, and don't even have their facts straight. It's not even worth arguing with them.
